Ways to Make Money in College

Updated: May 3, 2021

I vividly remember nights where I would go to bed hungry after using all my meal swipes for the week. I would hesitate to ask my parents for anything in fear of them worrying about me. I didn’t grow up poor, however, the sacrifices my family made to put me through school made me somewhat of a (legal) hustler on campus. I ended up working several jobs throughout my time in school. Some people, though, may not have to go such lengths. Recently, I have spoken with friends and mentors to combine our experiences and advice on the matter. Here are some of the best ways to make money in college.

1. Find a work study

Each year, students in certain financial situations can be found eligible for work study. These are small jobs around campus in which students can get part-time hours for a little bit of extra cash. These jobs can range anywhere from setting up events, to shushing your peers as a library assistant. Also, many of these jobs are stationary and relaxed, thus providing a nice environment to get a little homework done while on the job.

2. Tutor

Are you a condescending smart-ass? Tired of helping your friends for free? I have got the perfect moneymaker for you.

Joking again this time, seriously. Moving on.

Tutoring! It is likely you’ve used or known someone who used a tutor growing up. I don’t think I ever would have passed 9th grade geometry if it wasn’t for my cousin helping me on the weekends. If you are really good at a certain subject, use it to put some change in your pocket!

3. Become an RA

Not applying to be a resident assistant is one of my biggest regrets in college. Several close friends of mine have done this almost every year and have saved a ton of money.

The thing about being an RA is not the bi-weekly check. There actually is not any of that. The hook is the exemption from paying room and board. Did y’all read that correctly? Exemption from paying room and board. At the laughably expensive school I attend, that means thousands upon thousands of dollars are saved.

This is a commitment, though, and will eat up a good bit of your schedule. However, if you’re organized and responsible, you can squeeze other profitable endeavors into your routine.

4. Doordash/Uber/Lyft

This is not an ad I promise. Seriously though, if you have your car on your college campus this is an easy way to make decent money. Clock in/out whenever you want and work your own schedule in your free time. Who knows…you might get some pretty nice tips?

5. TaskRabbit

This is for the average Joe or Joanne to literally lend a hand where needed. A friend of mine used this site in our sophomore year and made a good amount of money. Jobs can be anything; helping someone move out, babysitting, dog walking, you name it. Go make that money!
